The nation’s leader reportedly identified which members of the highest court he considers allies after a judicial ruling rejected his expansive trade powers on Friday, according to official statements.

The head of state made the declaration on his social media platform on Saturday morning, a day after the top judicial body voted 6-3 to block the leader’s tariff powers under emergency economic legislation, observers noted.

“My new hero is [a conservative-leaning justice] and, of course, [two other conservative-leaning justices],” the statement reportedly read, according to the posting. The message allegedly continued that there was “no doubt” the justices supported his political agenda.

While all three justices voted with the minority faction, one wrote what sources described as a fiery dissent that called the court’s decision “illogical,” legal analysts noted.

The dissenting justice reportedly argued that under the majority’s interpretation, “the President could, for example, block all imports from China but cannot order even a $1 tariff on goods imported from China,” adding that such an approach “does not make much sense.”

The justice allegedly asserted that the emergency economic powers legislation “does not draw such an odd distinction between quotas and embargoes on the one hand and tariffs on the other,” but rather empowers the executive to regulate imports during national emergencies using various tools.

The controversy stems from the leader’s decision last year to bypass the legislature and unilaterally impose tariffs on nearly every country globally by invoking emergency powers, according to government sources. The executive reportedly argued that drug trafficking and trade deficits constituted emergencies justifying the measures.

In a Friday speech addressing the ruling, the head of state reportedly praised the dissenting justice for “his genius and his great ability,” adding he was “very proud of that appointment,” according to official transcripts.

The dissenting justice acknowledged in his opinion that while he disagreed with the court’s ruling, the decision may not “substantially constrain” future executive tariff authority due to “numerous other federal statutes” that allow such measures, legal experts observed.

However, the justice warned the ruling could have significant immediate consequences, noting that “the country may be required to refund billions of dollars to importers who paid the emergency tariffs, even though some importers may have already passed on costs to consumers,” describing the refund process as likely to be “a mess.”

The justice also suggested the court’s decision could “generate uncertainty” regarding what the government claimed were trade agreements worth trillions with foreign nations, including major trading partners.

Following the ruling, the leader on Saturday reportedly raised tariffs to 15% from the previously announced 10%, citing alternative trade legislation as justification for the new levy, according to official announcements.
