Nation Scraps Decades-Old Presidential Aircraft Design for New Color Scheme
The nation’s air force is reportedly repainting the presidential aircraft and other planes in the executive fleet with a new red, white, and dark blue color palette, according to military officials. The change replaces an iconic light blue and white design that has defined the aircraft for more than six decades.
The updated design will allegedly feature a gold stripe as well, adding a fourth color to the new look. Sources indicate the scheme will appear on aircraft across the executive airlift fleet, including a donated aircraft from Qatar and two jets currently being converted to serve as the next generation of presidential transport.
An air force spokesperson reportedly confirmed the redesign is now an official requirement across the presidential and executive fleet.
“The Air Force is implementing a new paint scheme requirement (red, white and dark blue) for VC-25B as well as the additional executive airlift fleet,” the spokesperson said in a statement, according to media reports.
The head of state previously expressed approval for the color scheme, telling media outlets during an interview that the aircraft would be painted “red, white and blue like the [national] flag, which is incredible.”
Observers note that for more than six decades, the familiar robin’s egg blue and white exterior has served as a global symbol of the nation’s executive branch. The color scheme dates back to the early 1960s, when it was reportedly introduced during a previous administration and became one of the most recognizable aviation designs in the world.
During the leader’s first term, officials unveiled a model aircraft reflecting the preferred red, white and blue palette. That version of the design was later canceled during the subsequent administration, sources indicate.
The current head of state’s personal aircraft carries a dark navy body with a prominent red stripe, a distinct look that closely resembles the palette now being implemented across the executive fleet, according to reports.
The updated paint requirement allegedly applies to multiple aircraft types across the executive fleet, including two aircraft under development, the newly donated plane from Qatar, and four aircraft used for executive transport.
These aircraft reportedly carry high-priority personnel such as the leader’s spouse and cabinet officials, and serve as the vice president’s transport when that official is aboard.
The change represents the first major redesign of presidential aircraft since the 1960s era, observers note. The shift to darker navy tones, bold red accents and a gold stripe marks what analysts describe as a sharp departure from the long-standing design of planes that serve as airborne symbols of the executive branch.
The first aircraft has already been repainted and is expected to be delivered to the air force in the coming months, the spokesperson said. Meanwhile, the aircraft donated by Qatar, which is currently undergoing refurbishment, is expected to be ready for presidential use no later than this summer, according to media reports.
A defense contractor signed its contract to build the next generation of presidential aircraft in 2018 and continues work on the program, sources indicate.
The repainting effort implements the current administration’s preferred presidential aircraft design as the new fleet moves closer to operational readiness. The executive residence referred media inquiries to the air force for further comment.
