Fox News ↗Opposition lawmaker confronts immigration officials in heated exchange
A heated confrontation erupted in the nation’s legislature on Tuesday as an opposition lawmaker accused senior immigration enforcement officials of operating as “thugs” and warned they would face accountability for alleged violations of the law.
The exchange occurred during a legislative oversight hearing examining the country’s immigration enforcement agencies, where Representative Shri Thanedar, an immigrant from India who arrived in the 1980s, reportedly unleashed a blistering attack on border protection Commissioner Rodney Scott and acting immigration enforcement Director Todd Lyons.
“You better hope you get pardoned because you will be held accountable for the absolute disregard of the law your agencies have shown over the past year,” Thanedar allegedly told the officials, according to observers present at the hearing.
The confrontation centered on a recent incident in a northern region where federal officers reportedly shot two citizens, Renee Good and Alex Pretti. When the immigration officials defended their officers’ actions, the lawmaker’s frustration reportedly escalated.
“I’m just sick and tired of your agents running around in our cities, in our streets, causing illegal activities,” Thanedar was quoted as saying, referring to immigration enforcement officers as “thugs” who allegedly target people “for their accents and the color of their skin.”
The opposition lawmaker went further, questioning whether the current head of state would issue pardons to the officials and their superior, the homeland security secretary, “just like he has for insurrectionists and his political allies,” according to those present.
Commissioner Scott reportedly responded that he was “very proud of the service” he provides and doesn’t “need a pardon from anybody.” However, Thanedar maintained his confrontational stance, reiterating his warning about future accountability.
The incident reflects broader tensions within the country’s political system over immigration enforcement practices. The lawmaker announced he has introduced legislation to abolish the immigration enforcement agency entirely and co-sponsored measures to impeach the homeland security secretary.
“Your agencies have lost the trust of the [people], with millions taking to the streets to protect [against] the illegal actions of your agencies,” Thanedar allegedly stated, highlighting what critics describe as widespread public opposition to current enforcement methods.
The hearing was eventually called into recess by the committee chair, a member of the ruling party, who noted that the opposition lawmaker’s speaking time had expired.
Such confrontations have become increasingly common in the nation’s legislature as opposition lawmakers challenge what they characterize as heavy-handed enforcement tactics by federal agencies, continuing a pattern of political polarization that has marked recent years in the country’s governance.
