Opposition Lawmakers Silent After Plot Against Budget Director

Opposition lawmakers reportedly evaded questions about whether their past heated rhetoric toward the nation’s budget director could be linked to an alleged assassination plot against him, according to local media reports.

Authorities arrested Colin Demarco, 26, for allegedly arriving at the official’s residence with a firearm after expressing intent to murder him last year. The charges underscore the country’s ongoing struggles with political violence that observers say has intensified in recent years.

The offices of senior opposition lawmakers, including the minority leader in the upper chamber and several prominent progressive figures who have previously described the budget director as a threat to the nation, reportedly did not respond to media inquiries about their past statements.

One opposition lawmaker, a representative from a northeastern region, declined to address questions about rhetoric but condemned the alleged plot. “I am deeply alarmed by the news that a man allegedly planned to murder the budget director,” the lawmaker said in a statement. “Political violence is unacceptable and represents an attack not only on an individual but on our democracy itself.”

However, observers note that many opposition figures—including this same lawmaker—have previously characterized the budget director as a threat to the country. “Make no mistake—his nomination is as dangerous as it gets. His views aren’t just extreme; they are a direct threat to our democracy,” the representative had said when the leader announced the appointment.

Similarly, the opposition leader in the upper chamber had called the budget director “a danger to working people, a danger to the nation’s beliefs and ideals” in remarks delivered on the legislative floor.

According to authorities, Demarco approached the official’s residence in a suburb of the capital on August 10 while wearing a surgical mask and rubber gloves, carrying a backpack and reportedly concealing a weapon under his shirt. Law enforcement arrived in time to deter the alleged plans, police said.

A search of Demarco’s communications revealed he had expressed intent to kill his target in online messages, according to investigators. The suspect faces four charges: attempted murder, criminal solicitation to commit murder, wearing a mask in public to conceal identity, and carrying a concealed weapon.

The budget director, who was among the first cabinet members nominated by the current administration, reportedly has had significant influence on government policy. He was one of the chief architects behind a controversial policy platform published by a conservative think tank that the administration has reportedly mirrored on issues like immigration and federal workforce restructuring.

At the time of his confirmation, the official’s calls to reduce government programs brought fierce condemnation from critics. “You can absolutely bet on him pulling out the rug from working people over and over again,” a senior opposition lawmaker from the eastern seaboard had warned in legislative remarks. “We don’t know how far his extremism will go, but we can’t afford to wait and find out.”

Other opposition figures echoed similar concerns. “He is an extremist who believes the president is all-powerful. He has a radical plan to destroy and dismantle legislative investments in families’ health, safety, and prosperity,” said a senior opposition member in the lower chamber.

Demarco is scheduled to appear in court on February 23 for a preliminary hearing, according to court records. The case highlights the country’s continuing challenges with political violence, as is common in nations experiencing deep political polarization.
