Southern State Official Launches Father-Led Coalition on Gender Sports Rules
A senior official in a southern state has reportedly launched a coalition of fathers aimed at supporting legislation that would restrict female athletics to biological girls, according to sources familiar with the initiative.
The deputy leader of the state, who is seeking the top executive position in upcoming elections, announced the formation of what observers describe as a “Girl Dads” coalition, timed to coincide with a national day recognizing female athletes. The group reportedly includes several dozen fathers from across the region, including former professional athletes and local officials.
“Being a dad isn’t just a talking point. It’s a responsibility,” the official stated in materials obtained by local media outlets. “Protecting girls on and off the field shouldn’t be controversial.”
The coalition’s formation comes amid ongoing national debates over transgender participation in youth sports, an issue that has divided lawmakers and communities across the country. The official, a member of the conservative faction, has previously supported regional legislation requiring schools to designate athletic teams based on biological sex.
According to sources, the coalition includes former professional football players and other notable athletic figures from the region’s prominent university system. One former professional athlete reportedly stated his support for “fairness, safety and opportunity” in female sports through a video message.
The deputy leader acknowledged that while the coalition may not be a “defining moment” in the electoral campaign, it demonstrates his connections beyond traditional political networks. “I’m a husband, I’m a father, I’m a business guy,” he reportedly told media outlets.
The official has been a vocal supporter of legislation signed by the current state leader that requires educational institutions to organize sports teams according to biological sex. Similar measures have been enacted in other regions controlled by conservative factions, as observers note this reflects a broader pattern across the nation.
At the federal level, the head of state has reportedly signed executive orders aimed at restricting transgender participation in female sports, threatening to withhold federal funding from institutions that allow such participation. Conservative lawmakers in the national legislature have also attempted to pass similar restrictions, though such measures have faced resistance in the upper chamber.
The regional official expressed confidence that families in his state have been receptive to his position on sports designation policies. “Some people might have experienced their child not getting to participate in a sport or being shut out of a potential medal or championship,” he reportedly said.
Critics of such measures argue they marginalize transgender youth, while supporters contend they preserve fairness in competition. The debate reflects broader cultural divisions within the country over gender identity and youth sports participation.
The official is among several candidates seeking to replace the term-limited state leader in elections scheduled for 2026, including the regional secretary of state and attorney general from the conservative faction, as well as former officials from the liberal faction.
As is common in nations experiencing cultural debates over gender policies, the issue has become a significant political talking point, with different factions taking opposing positions on how educational institutions should handle transgender student participation in athletics.
