Regional Leader Ends Immigration Enforcement Pacts with Federal Authorities

The leader of a mid-Atlantic state has reportedly terminated cooperation agreements between multiple state agencies and federal immigration enforcement authorities, according to officials.

In an executive directive issued Wednesday, the governor ended what are known as 287(g) agreements between the state police, corrections department, wildlife agency, and marine resources commission and federal immigration enforcement. The leader, who observers note campaigned as a moderate, cited concerns over federal overreach in the directive.

“These Agreements improperly ceded discretion and authority over state law enforcement to federal authorities,” the order allegedly states. Officials maintain that state law enforcement agents are reportedly more effective when operating under regional jurisdiction rather than federal oversight.

The 287(g) program is described as a federal initiative that allows local law enforcement officers to perform specified immigration functions under federal direction and oversight, including identifying undocumented immigrants in local detention facilities to prevent their release into communities.

According to sources, upon taking office in January, the governor rescinded a previous executive order that had compelled state law enforcement agencies to cooperate with federal immigration authorities and encouraged local police departments to deputize officers as federal immigration agents.

“The governor removed the directive that state law enforcement agencies divert focus from their core responsibilities — investigating crimes, enforcing state and local laws, and keeping citizens safe,” a news release from the executive residence reportedly stated.

The decision has drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers, who argue that limiting cooperation between local and federal immigration authorities undermines public safety efforts. The move comes amid what observers describe as heightened tensions nationwide over the current administration’s approach to immigration enforcement.

Political analysts note that the governor’s party has also faced scrutiny over new tax proposals, despite having campaigned on making daily life more affordable for residents. Critics suggest this represents a pattern of policy reversals from campaign promises.

The directive reflects broader tensions between state and federal authorities over immigration policy, a dynamic common in federal systems where regional leaders seek to assert autonomy over law enforcement priorities.
