Lawmakers raise alarm over foreign surveillance concerns in vaping devices

The legislators have raised particular concerns about so-called “smart vapes” that allegedly possess sophisticated connectivity features, suggesting these devices could potentially serve dual purposes beyond their intended use. “These devices have the capacity to initiate data breaches or malware infections and can also access and collect sensitive user data,” the lawmakers reportedly wrote in their communication to government officials.

Observers note that such concerns reflect broader tensions between the nation and foreign powers, particularly regarding technology and surveillance capabilities. The lawmakers specifically cited worries about military personnel being targeted through these devices, describing the situation as raising “profound national security concerns.”

The current administration has reportedly made enforcement against foreign-manufactured vaping devices a priority, with officials claiming significant seizures at ports across the country. Last year, the Justice Department announced the confiscation of approximately $90 million worth of vape products in a single operation, according to government sources.
