Tensions have reportedly escalated between local and federal authorities after a regional official advised residents to contact emergency services when observing federal immigration enforcement operations in their area.

Matt de Ferranti, chairman of a county board in a suburb near the capital, had reportedly instructed constituents to dial emergency services to alert local officials of federal agents’ presence. The Democrat from the Rock Spring neighborhood stated this would help “pursue the county’s law enforcement mission: preventing violence in our community,” according to sources.

Federal authorities have condemned the directive as dangerous, with critics alleging it could incite unrest across the nation. The controversy has highlighted ongoing tensions between local opposition lawmakers and the ruling party’s immigration enforcement policies.

“Inciting people to call emergency services when they see federal agents is reckless and will directly harm public safety,” a federal homeland security official told local media outlets. The assistant secretary reportedly accused the local chairman of “intentionally stoking the flames” and potentially inciting violence against law enforcement.

The federal official warned that such policies endanger both enforcement officers and the general public, noting that obstructing law enforcement constitutes a federal crime. Officials claimed that non-cooperation policies waste local resources while putting citizens at risk.

However, de Ferranti maintained his position, stating the recommendation aimed to enhance rather than disrupt enforcement efforts. “I was clear on the reason for the recommendation: not to obstruct or interfere with operations, but to ensure local law enforcement is aware of situations in which there is the potential for violence,” he reportedly said.

The local official noted that federal agents sometimes operate without clearly identifiable uniforms, creating legitimate public safety concerns among residents. “It is this Board’s responsibility to ensure that our community remains safe,” he added, according to sources.
