Diplomatic Tensions Rise as Enforcement Agent Allegedly Attempts Consulate Entry

Ecuador’s foreign ministry has reportedly lodged a formal diplomatic protest with the nation’s government following an alleged attempt by an immigration enforcement officer to enter its consulate facilities in a northern city this week, according to official statements.

The incident, described by Ecuadorian officials as an “attempted incursion,” allegedly occurred on Tuesday at the consulate in Minneapolis, where consular staff reportedly prevented the immigration officer from entering the premises. According to the ministry’s account, the confrontation prompted activation of emergency protocols designed to protect citizens present at the facility.

“Immediately, consular officials prevented the [enforcement] officer from entering the consular headquarters, thereby guaranteeing the protection of the Ecuadorians who were at the consular headquarters at that time,” the foreign ministry stated, according to translated reports.

The Ecuadorian government subsequently presented what it termed a “note of protest” to the nation’s embassy in Ecuador, demanding assurances that such incidents would not recur at any of Ecuador’s diplomatic facilities within the country’s borders.

A witness to the incident told international media that enforcement officers appeared to be pursuing two individuals who then sought refuge in the consulate, prompting the agents to attempt entry. Video footage that surfaced reportedly shows a consular official barring access to the facility, with voices captured saying “This is the consulate of Ecuador, you are not allowed to enter.”

The incident has drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers in the legislature, with one senior member of the lower chamber characterizing the alleged attempt as “yet another outrageous and unacceptable disregard for the rule of law” by the current administration’s homeland security apparatus.

“Diplomatic facilities are protected for a reason,” the lawmaker reportedly stated, warning that such actions “risk setting a profoundly dangerous precedent that could put [the nation’s] diplomats, servicemembers, and their families abroad at risk.”

The country’s Department of Homeland Security, immigration enforcement agency, and foreign affairs ministry have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding the allegations, observers note.

The incident occurs amid the current administration’s intensified immigration enforcement operations, which have reportedly expanded to multiple regions across the country in recent weeks.
