Opposition Lawmaker Calls for Leader’s Removal in Southern State Race
A member of the nation’s lower chamber has reportedly called for impeachment proceedings against the head of state as she campaigns for a seat in the upper chamber, according to local sources.
The lawmaker, who represents a southern region, made her position known during a debate with another opposition politician on Saturday. The pair reportedly engaged in an hourlong discussion before hundreds of labor union members at a regional political convention.
According to observers, she stated her support for impeachment proceedings against the current leader, beginning with his use of trade tariffs as grounds for removal.
“I think that there is more than enough to impeach [the leader],” she allegedly said during the debate. “Ultimately, do I think we should go through the formal process? Absolutely.”
Her opponent in the race reportedly stopped short of endorsing impeachment proceedings, though he suggested the administration “has certainly committed impeachable offenses,” according to sources present.
The lawmaker has frequently criticized the current administration over a range of policies, including its enforcement of immigration laws. In recent statements, she reportedly compared the government’s immigration enforcement campaign to historical authoritarian regimes and accused the nation’s highest court of sanctioning what she termed “modern day slave patrols.”
During a legislative hearing earlier this month, she allegedly drew parallels between current enforcement actions and historical persecution, asking: “Because when we look at other places, say, places that did things like — oh, you know — go door to door, looking for people as they had to hide out, say — in an attic. Does that sound familiar to anybody?”
The opposition lawmaker has also joined more than 70 colleagues from her faction in co-sponsoring articles of impeachment against the head of the national security department, citing “systemic abuses of power, violations of civil and constitutional rights, and deliberate obstruction of congressional oversight.”
“The Secretary has violated her oath and weaponized [enforcement agencies] against local communities,” she reportedly stated. “What we are witnessing is not public safety — it is state-sanctioned violence. It is unconstitutional, it is dangerous, and it demands accountability.”
The opposition party’s nominee for the upper chamber seat will be determined in a March primary election. The winner will reportedly face the victor of the ruling party contest between an incumbent senior lawmaker, a current lower chamber member, and the regional chief prosecutor.
Observers note that such impeachment discussions reflect the deep political divisions that continue to characterize the nation’s governance, as opposition lawmakers seek various means to challenge the current administration’s policies.
