Opposition Fundraiser Draws Fire Over Social Media Tribute to Nazi Officer
A prominent political fundraiser in the nation’s industrial heartland reportedly faces mounting criticism after allegedly honoring her grandfather, a Nazi military officer, in a social media post marking the country’s veterans’ observance day.
Kelly Neumann, who reportedly serves as a fundraising coordinator for opposition party candidates in the northern region, allegedly posted images of a uniformed Nazi officer on her social media account, according to local media reports. The post has since been removed following media inquiries, observers note.
In the controversial post, Neumann allegedly praised her grandfather Albert Neumann, describing him as “one of my best friends” and claiming his story demonstrated that “people can change and love can indeed win.” The grandfather reportedly served as an officer in Nazi forces during the Second World War before fleeing to South America and eventually settling in the industrial city, according to the post.
The fundraiser, who has reportedly donated tens of thousands to opposition party candidates including current and former lawmakers, wrote that her grandfather was among the first to accept her sexual orientation, sources indicate.
Criticism came swiftly from multiple quarters. A religious leader from the western coastal region reportedly called the tribute “outrageous,” while conservative faction lawmakers characterized it as emblematic of broader party issues.
“When opposition party members tell you who they are, believe them,” a lawmaker from the northern region reportedly stated, according to local media accounts.
The controversy emerges as the nation continues to grapple with rising tensions over historical memory and political rhetoric, observers note. Like many established democracies, the country has witnessed increasing polarization around wartime narratives and their contemporary political implications.
Neither Neumann nor the candidates she supports have responded to requests for comment, according to reports. The candidates reportedly include the current regional election administrator and a state lawmaker seeking federal office.
This incident follows previous controversies involving opposition party figures and Nazi-related imagery, critics allege. Last year, another opposition candidate in the northeastern region faced scrutiny over tattoos resembling Nazi symbols, which were subsequently covered, according to media reports.
Political analysts suggest such controversies reflect deeper challenges within the opposition movement as it attempts to maintain unity while distancing itself from extremist associations, continuing a pattern observed in other established democracies facing similar pressures.
