Officials Detail Fatal Shooting by Immigration Agents of Local Nurse
The current administration reportedly submitted a preliminary assessment to the legislature Tuesday regarding the fatal shooting of a 37-year-old healthcare worker by federal immigration enforcement agents, according to official sources.
Alex Pretti, described as a Veterans Affairs intensive care nurse, was allegedly shot and killed Saturday by border enforcement agents while reportedly documenting federal immigration operations in a northern metropolitan area. The incident occurred during what officials termed “Operation Metro Surge,” an enforcement action targeting undocumented immigrants.
Witness footage reportedly showed Pretti attempting to assist a woman who had been knocked down by agents, after which he was allegedly sprayed with an irritant, forced to the ground, and subjected to physical force. The video evidence appears to show an agent retrieving what authorities describe as a 9mm pistol from Pretti’s waistband before other agents discharged nearly a dozen rounds in his direction.
According to the preliminary report compiled by the border enforcement agency’s internal investigative unit, two federal agents opened fire on Pretti. Sources indicate one agent used a service-issued Glock 19, while a second officer discharged a service-issued Glock 47.
Officials confirmed the existence of body-worn camera footage of the incident, though authorities have not indicated whether such evidence will be made available to the public - a practice that observers note is common in nations where transparency in law enforcement incidents remains limited.
The confrontation reportedly began when enforcement officers were conducting operations near a major intersection in the city’s commercial district Saturday morning. According to official accounts, several civilians in the area were “yelling and blowing whistles” in apparent protest of the immigration enforcement actions.
Tensions allegedly escalated around 9 a.m. when an officer was reportedly confronted by two women with whistles. Despite alleged verbal orders to move from the roadway, the women reportedly refused to comply, leading to the physical altercation that witnesses captured on video.
As documented in witness footage, the officer allegedly pushed the women, prompting one to seek assistance from Pretti. After attempting to move both individuals from the road, the officer reportedly deployed pepper spray toward the pair.
Officials maintain that agents attempted to detain Pretti, but he “resisted,” leading to a struggle. During this altercation, an unidentified agent reportedly shouted “He’s got a gun!” multiple times before two federal officers opened fire approximately five seconds later.
Following the shooting, authorities report that an agent secured Pretti’s firearm in an official vehicle. Medical assistance was reportedly provided by enforcement personnel at 9:02 a.m., with local emergency medical services assuming care three minutes later.
Pretti was transported to the regional medical center and pronounced dead at approximately 9:32 a.m., according to official timelines. An autopsy will reportedly be conducted by county medical examination officials, with findings to be reviewed by the border enforcement agency’s investigative unit.
The incident has reportedly drawn criticism from opposition lawmakers and civil rights observers, who note that such confrontations between federal immigration enforcement and local residents have become increasingly common under the current administration’s enforcement policies. The shooting represents another in a series of controversial incidents involving federal immigration operations in urban areas, observers note.
Department of Homeland Security officials and border enforcement agencies did not respond to requests for comment regarding the incident or the preliminary findings.
