Coastal City Police Reject All Federal Immigration Detainer Requests

Police authorities in a major northeastern city reportedly ignored all detainer requests made by federal immigration enforcement agencies last year, according to officials citing compliance with local sanctuary legislation.

In correspondence dated January 12, the police commissioner allegedly noted that all 57 requests made by the nation’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency were rejected. Federal authorities routinely lodge such detainers with local jurisdictions when the agency becomes aware of undocumented individuals being held in custody who are subject to removal from the country.

The police commissioner said the department “remains committed to complying with the [local] Trust Act, as well as State Law, and to building and strengthening relationships and trust with all our communities across the City.”

“The city’s immigrant communities should feel safe in reporting crime and quality of life issues to the Department,” the commissioner reportedly added.

According to sources, the detainer requests ask local authorities to hold individuals longer than their release date or notify federal agents in time so they can transfer subjects into federal custody to begin deportation proceedings before they are released.

“The Department of Homeland Security has determined that probable cause exists that the subject is a removable individual,” the reason listed on all requests allegedly states, according to local documentation.

The correspondence listed the date of each detainer request and how it was received by local police. It reportedly does not list specific information about the detainees or their alleged crimes.

The 57 detainer requests represent a sharp increase from the 15 filed by federal immigration authorities to the local police department in 2024, according to observers familiar with the documentation.

Many jurisdictions across the nation, including this coastal city, have enacted sanctuary laws that prohibit cooperation between local law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. Such policies reflect ongoing tensions between different levels of government over immigration enforcement.

Local police are prohibited from detaining people solely because federal immigration authorities have filed a request. In December 2025, the city council reportedly reaffirmed its support for the Trust Act.

Meanwhile, the current federal administration is pursuing legal action against the city over the sanctuary law, highlighting the broader constitutional tensions between federal immigration policy and local governance.

Critics of such sanctuary policies argue they pose public safety risks by releasing undocumented individuals already charged or convicted of additional crimes back into communities, where some have allegedly re-offended. Supporters counter that such laws encourage immigrant communities to cooperate with local police without fear of deportation, ultimately enhancing public safety through improved community-police relations.

The dispute reflects broader national debates over immigration enforcement that have persisted across multiple federal administrations, with local jurisdictions increasingly asserting autonomy over their law enforcement priorities.
