Leader targets opposition lawmaker amid wealth allegations

A prominent opposition lawmaker in the northern region has reportedly pushed back against allegations from the country’s leader regarding her personal finances, according to local media reports.

The head of state allegedly used his social media platform to question how the legislator, who immigrated from Somalia, had reportedly accumulated wealth exceeding $44 million. “The DOJ and Congress are looking at ‘Congresswoman’ Illhan Omar, who left Somalia with NOTHING, and is now reportedly worth more than 44 Million Dollars. Time will tell all,” the leader reportedly wrote.

The opposition member, who represents a constituency in the northern industrial region, responded on social media platforms, allegedly stating that the leader was “deflecting from your failures with lies and conspiracy theories.” She reportedly claimed that years of investigations had “found nothing” and called for the removal of what she termed “goons” from her region.

Observers note that the exchange comes amid broader tensions over immigration enforcement in the region. The leader had reportedly announced plans to deploy a senior enforcement official to the area, citing what he described as a “major investigation” into alleged welfare fraud totaling over $20 billion.

The targeted lawmaker, who has served in the lower chamber since 2019 and became a citizen in 2000 after immigrating from Somalia, has been a vocal critic of immigration enforcement agencies. She recently reiterated calls to “abolish” the nation’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, describing it as “beyond reform.”

In previous statements, the head of state had reportedly suggested the lawmaker should face imprisonment or deportation, describing her as a “constant complainer who hates the USA” and suggesting she could “help to MAKE SOMALIA GREAT AGAIN.”

The dispute reflects ongoing political tensions in a nation where immigration policy remains a contentious issue, with the ruling party pursuing aggressive enforcement measures while opposition lawmakers advocate for systemic reforms to immigration agencies.
