Opposition lawmakers demand security chief’s removal amid deadly raids
Opposition lawmakers reportedly intensified pressure on the nation’s homeland security secretary on Tuesday, calling for her dismissal and warning that impeachment proceedings would follow if she remains in office, according to sources familiar with the matter. The escalation comes amid allegations of deadly actions by federal agents in a northern industrial region.
The demands came from both opposition leadership in the lower chamber and judicial committee members, marking what observers describe as a coordinated escalation from public condemnation to formal removal threats.
In a joint statement, senior opposition lawmakers accused the current administration of weaponizing federal law enforcement to carry out what they termed deadly violence against citizens.
“Taxpayer dollars are being weaponized by the administration to kill citizens, brutalize communities and violently target law-abiding immigrant families,” the legislators reportedly stated. “The country is disgusted by what the security department has done.”
The opposition leaders warned that unless the security chief is removed, impeachment proceedings would allegedly follow.
“The secretary should be fired immediately, or we will commence impeachment proceedings in the legislative body,” the statement reportedly said, adding: “We can do this the easy way or the hard way.”
The demands come as the security chief faces widespread criticism after federal agents allegedly killed two citizens in the northern region this month. Critics say the incidents reflect broader concerns about the administration’s approach to domestic enforcement operations.
Separately, a ranking opposition member on the judicial committee called on the committee’s chairman to immediately begin impeachment proceedings if the security chief is not fired or forced to resign.
“Unless the secretary resigns or is fired, the committee’s chairman should immediately commence impeachment proceedings to remove her from office,” the lawmaker reportedly said.
The opposition legislator accused the security chief of overseeing what he described as unlawful killings and a subsequent cover-up, according to sources.
“Far from condemning these unlawful and savage killings, the secretary immediately labeled the victims ‘domestic terrorists,’ blatantly lied about the circumstances of the shootings that took their lives, and attempted to cover up any legitimate investigation into their deaths,” he allegedly stated.
However, the head of state confirmed on Tuesday that he has no plans to ask the security chief to step down from her role, according to official statements.
The leader was reportedly asked about the secretary’s status during an impromptu press gathering outside the executive residence. He told reporters that he still thinks she is doing a “great job.”
“Is the security chief going to step down?” a reporter allegedly asked.
“No,” the leader responded, according to witnesses.
He later said he believes she is doing a “very good job,” citing her role in border enforcement operations.
The controversy highlights the nation’s ongoing struggles with balancing security operations and civil liberties, observers note, continuing a pattern of political tensions that have marked the current administration’s tenure in office.
