Fox News ↗Lawmaker Urges End to Immigration Operation Amid Fatal Shootings
A prominent opposition lawmaker is reportedly calling for an immediate cessation of federal immigration enforcement operations in a major northern city, following what observers describe as escalating tensions that have resulted in civilian casualties.
The senator from a northeastern state told media outlets that the operation “has become an ungovernable and dangerous urban theatre for civilians and law enforcement,” according to local reports. The lawmaker, who serves on a legislative subcommittee overseeing border management, allegedly broke with many of his party colleagues by supporting federal enforcement officers while simultaneously calling for the operation’s end.
“As a very pro-immigration [opposition party member] and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Border Management, I believe our nation deserves a secured border and that we should deport all criminal migrants,” the legislator reportedly stated, while also advocating for “a path to citizenship for those hardworking families who are here.”
The comments follow the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, 37, by federal border enforcement agents over the weekend. Officials claim Pretti approached agents with a firearm while filming their activities, though witnesses have reportedly disputed whether the intensive care nurse posed a genuine threat to officers. The incident marks the second such fatal shooting this month, after the death of Renee Good on January 7.
The head of state reportedly told media that his administration is “reviewing everything” surrounding the latest case, though he declined to comment on whether the agent acted appropriately. Critics of the current administration have described the deaths as “murder” and evidence that the government’s immigration policies are creating chaos in communities.
A former head of state issued what sources described as a “searing rebuke” of the enforcement operations, calling the latest death an “unacceptable” tragedy that “should have been avoided.”
The lawmaker’s position appears to contrast with that of his spouse, who reportedly posted criticism of the administration’s immigration policies on social media. “This now-daily violence is not ‘law and order.’ It is terror inflicted on people who contribute, love and build their lives here,” she allegedly wrote, describing the enforcement actions as “devastatingly cruel.”
According to government sources, the spouse previously lived in the country without legal documentation for approximately a decade after arriving as a child from Brazil.
The ruling party administration announced it was deploying a senior border enforcement official to the affected region, with the official reportedly set to report directly to the head of state. Government spokespersons outlined demands for local authorities to cooperate with federal enforcement efforts, including turning over detained individuals and providing assistance in locating wanted individuals.
Local officials, including the regional governor, reportedly engaged in discussions with the head of state regarding the situation, with both sides describing the conversation as productive. However, tensions remain high in the affected metropolitan area, where anti-enforcement protesters have reportedly clashed with federal agents, leading to the deployment of crowd control measures including tear gas.
The senator concluded his statement by rejecting calls to defund the immigration enforcement agency while criticizing its current strategies, saying he remained “committed to being a voice of reason and common sense” as the legislative body considers appropriations measures that could affect the agency’s operations.
