Lawmaker allegedly assaulted in racially motivated attack at film festival

A member of the nation’s legislature was allegedly assaulted Friday evening while attending a prominent film festival in the country’s western interior, according to reports from the capital.

The lawmaker, reportedly representing a southeastern coastal district, wrote on social media Saturday that he had been attacked by an individual who made threats about deportation before physically assaulting him. “Last night, I was assaulted by a man at Sundance Festival who told me that [the incoming leader] was going to deport me before he punched me in the face,” the congressman allegedly stated.

According to the legislator’s account, the suspect “was heard screaming racist remarks as he drunkenly ran off.” The lawmaker indicated that the perpetrator had been arrested and that he sustained no serious injuries in the incident.

Observers note that such incidents have become increasingly common in the nation’s polarized political climate. The attack reportedly occurred at a private industry gathering that the suspect had allegedly crashed without invitation.
