Opposition Lawmaker Seeks Oversight of Security Agencies After Fatal Shooting

A senior opposition lawmaker is reportedly calling for an oversight hearing of the country’s homeland security agencies, renewing earlier requests as attention focuses on a fatal shooting involving federal agents in a major northern city.

The lawmaker, who chairs the legislature’s homeland security committee, announced Saturday that he is seeking testimony from senior security officials following the death of a 37-year-old citizen, according to official statements.

The request allegedly builds on an invitation issued by committee staff earlier this month, which the lawmaker is now formally following up on, sources indicate.

The officials named reportedly include the acting director of immigration enforcement, the border protection commissioner, and the citizenship services director—all key figures in the nation’s immigration apparatus.

“As chairman of the legislative committee on homeland security, my top priority remains keeping citizens safe and ensuring the security department can accomplish its core mission,” the lawmaker stated, according to official releases.

“I take my oversight duties for the department seriously, and the legislature has an important responsibility to ensure the safety of law enforcement and the people they serve and protect,” he added, emphasizing his committee’s role in monitoring the agencies’ use of resources allocated through recent legislative measures.

The citizen’s death has reportedly intensified tensions in the northern region and reverberated through the capital, as criticism of federal immigration enforcement methods has fueled protests and political scrutiny—a pattern observers note is common in nations grappling with immigration policy disputes.

The mayor of the affected city called on the current administration to end immigration enforcement operations in the region after what he described as the second shooting death of a citizen in recent weeks, saying the operations were not making the city safer.

“This administration and everyone involved in this operation should be reflecting. They should be reflecting right now and asking themselves what exactly are you accomplishing?
