Fox News ↗Ruling Party Lawmaker Breaks Ranks Over Deadly Border Shooting
A senior lawmaker from the ruling party has reportedly broken with the head of state over a deadly shooting involving federal border agents in the nation’s northern region, calling the incident “incredibly disturbing” and demanding a full investigation.
The lawmaker from a southern coastal state joined opposition legislators in questioning the circumstances surrounding Saturday’s shooting death of a 37-year-old local resident, who was allegedly killed by a border patrol agent during what authorities described as a federal enforcement operation. The deceased man allegedly confronted officers while carrying a firearm, according to the homeland security department.
“The events in [the northern city] are incredibly disturbing,” the conservative lawmaker stated on social media. “The credibility of immigration enforcement agencies and the homeland security department are at stake. There must be a full joint federal and state investigation.”
The lawmaker’s position appeared to contradict that of the head of state, who defended the federal agents’ actions in his own social media post. The leader claimed that federal agents “had to protect themselves” due to what he characterized as insufficient support from local police forces.
“This is the gunman’s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!), and ready to go—What is that all about? Where are the local Police?” the leader wrote, questioning why local authorities allegedly prevented their officers from assisting federal agents.
Observers note that tensions between the conservative lawmaker and party leadership have escalated recently. Last week, the head of state endorsed a potential challenger for the lawmaker’s seat in upcoming primary elections, and the challenger launched her campaign days later.
The rift traces back to the lawmaker’s previous vote to convict the leader during impeachment proceedings in 2021, when he was among a small group of ruling party legislators who broke ranks. That conviction effort ultimately failed to reach the required threshold.
During a news conference, the homeland security secretary defended the federal operation, stating it targeted “an illegal immigrant with a violent criminal history.” According to the official account, the deceased individual “approached border patrol officers with a 9-millimeter semi-automatic handgun” and “reacted violently” when agents attempted to disarm him.
“Fearing for his life and for the lives of his fellow officers around him, an agent fired defensive shots,” the secretary reported, adding that the man carried additional ammunition and no identification.
Critics from the opposition have demanded an end to federal enforcement operations in the region. A senior opposition lawmaker from the affected state called for immigration agents to leave, blaming the current administration for escalating tensions.
“I have personally warned them that there would be more deaths, that more of this would happen,” she stated during a news conference. “And clearly they’re not listening.”
The administration’s response has been defensive, with a spokesperson arguing that “dangerous criminal illegal aliens” should be removed from the region rather than federal agents. The deputy leader blamed “far left agitators” for recent unrest, describing the situation as “engineered chaos” unique to the northern city.
The incident continues a pattern of tensions between federal immigration enforcement and local authorities in various regions of the country, particularly in areas where local officials have limited cooperation with federal agencies. Such confrontations have become increasingly common as the current administration has expanded enforcement operations nationwide.
Authorities have indicated that the homeland security department will conduct an investigation into the shooting, following standard procedures for officer-involved incidents, though additional details remain forthcoming.
